What is The National Stud Diploma Course?
- A 6 month intensive residential training course at The National Stud
- An opportunity for students to experience all aspects of a busy commercial stud, combined with a programme of lectures and visits
Why The National Stud Diploma Course?
- A unique opportunity for those with previous equine experience to pursue a career within the Thoroughbred breeding industry
- An internationally recognised, specialist Thoroughbred breeding course
- The chance to gain recognised qualifications and valuable practical experience
- Many former students are actively involved in stud management, whilst others have successfully made their names as trainers, bloodstock agents, auctioneers and journalists.
What will I be doing?
- Students rotate around barren, maiden, foaling and nursery barns gaining experience in all areas of stud work including:
- Assisting with foaling
- Assisting with teasing and covering
- Care of mare and foals
- Assisting with the daily veterinary procedures
- Continual assessment and training towards the NVQ level 2 or 3
- Examinations, assignments and a formal interview at the end of the course.
- A unique programme of lectures given by leading authorities in stud management, veterinary medicine nutrition, pedigrees and other industry related subjects
- Visits to studs, training yards, veterinary centres, industry institutions and other industry related businesses
What do I gain?
- An NVQ level 2 (or units of level 3) in Racehorse Care (Breeding option)
- Appointed Persons First Aid certificate
- ART Basic Safe Tractor Handling Certificate
- Invaluable experience of working on a busy commercial stud
How much does it cost and where will I live?
- Training is free to students aged 18 to 25 who have been resident of the EU for three years or more
- Accommodation and meals are provided in the student hostel
- Students will receive a training allowance for their work
What do I need to apply?
- Aged 18 and over
- At least one year of relevant equine experience is preferred
- The ambition to succeed within the Thoroughbred breeding industry
- A passion for the care and breeding of Thoroughbred horses
Each year awards are presented to students who have excelled on the course.
