The next Apprenticeship course begins October 2007. Applications are now being accepted.
What is the Apprenticeship?
- An initial 9 week residential training course at The National Stud
- Followed by a guaranteed 10 month placement on an approved stud
Why the Apprenticeship?

What will I be doing?
- Training and working under supervision
- You will be assessed for knowledge and practical ability in the following subject areas:
- Routine horsecare
- Watering and feeding
- Horse clothing / saddlery
- Care of the horse at grass
- Health and Safety
- Conduct (working relationships)
- Reproduction and parturition care
- Handling youngstock
What do I gain?
- An NVQ level 2 in Racehorse Care (Breeding option)
- Key Skills
- Appointed Persons First Aid Certificate
- BHEST Intermediate Certificate in Horse Care
How much does it cost and where will I live?
- Training is free
- Accommodation and all meals are provided at the student hostel during the initial 9 week course
- Students can apply for an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) to assist with living costs
What do I need to apply?
- Aged between 16 and 18 years
- Enthusiasm and desire to succeed within the industry
- Suitably motivated to complete the training
- A passion for the care and breeding of Thoroughbred horses
